“DOCTOR, WHAT DO YOU think?”

“Complete exhaustion. It’s as if Leg went at least a month without eating,” the clan doctor replied anxiously. He’d joined the Brown Bears with Lando and was already showing off his skills. “I gave him an IV that should keep him stable, though it won’t wake him up. Unfortunately, medicine is powerless here. Either he comes back, or he stays in the dream world. What he did to his body... It’s incredible and horrifying. People don’t make it through that.”

“Why didn’t you stop him?” Ingar attacked Elrin and Had the moment the healer left.

“Leg is usually fine with that,” Elrin started, though the fist that came crashing down on the table stopped him there.

“He’s usually fine with that?!” Ingar was having a hard time staying out of berserker mode. The air was cooling quickly. And while Barx generally stepped in to talk him down in cases like that, the shaman was just as furious.

“Can you imagine what’s going to happen if he doesn’t wake up?! Yes, Leg is incompetent. He’s a mage always looking to test the limits of his power. That’s normal. But you’re both leaders! You should be thinking about your people even when they’re not thinking about themselves! Or did you think you could sit back and relax now that you’re at the top?”

“The doctor said the boy is better,” Arin said. “I’m sure he’ll be fine. He just overdid it by pulling twelve tons of mithril out of the ground.”

“You two should keep your mouth shut,” Barx shot back, turning his gaze on his daughter and Lando. “You want your playtime? Be my guest. But don’t do it in secret and to the detriment of the clan. Why weren’t you keeping an eye on what these kids were doing?”

“Perhaps, we’d be better served thinking about what to do next rather than moaning about the whole thing,” Lando replied implacably. “If any of the empires finds out how much mithril we have, they’ll tear up our agreements and march their armies right over here. Twelve tons is enough for them to go against their totems. If you ask me, we need—”

But Lando didn’t have time to finish his thought before the hall door was thrown open and a panting servant ran in.

“Raise the alarm! There’s a battle going on outside the city walls!”
